
Heavy rain lashed the southeast of South Korea, flooding a school in Busan and triggering landslides that demolished a senior citizens’ center. At least one person died when a bus was washed away, Yonhap News said.
As much as 242 millimeters (9.5 inches) of rain fell today in parts of Busan and about 270 millimeters in nearby Changwon as of 4 p.m. local time, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration. More heavy rain is forecast.
South Korea’s Minister of Security and Public Administration ordered schools to adjust their opening and closing hours according to weather conditions and to review evacuation procedures, while advising citizens to prepare essential items in case of a sudden need to evacuate, according to a statement on its website.
Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. was forced to halt operations at its Kori No. 2 nuclear reactor after rain seeped into a water-intake facility, spokeswoman Choi Si Ye said by phone.
Footage broadcast on YTN showed swollen rivers filled with debris and drivers abandoning partly submerged cars. In Changwon, a bus was washed into a river with as many as six people on board, Yonhap reported. One body has been recovered with the other passengers still missing, the agency said. Television footage showed the bus wedged against a bridge with rescuers trying to lift it with a crane.
A landslide caused the collapse of a senior citizens’ center, with no reports of casualties. Flooding up to the third floor of the Yangduk Girlsâ Middle School forced about 400 students to evacuate to the roof, Yonhap said. All were rescued, the agency later reported.
Some flights between Gimhae airport near Busan and Jeju island were canceled due to bad weather. Landslides along the highway between Busan and Ulsan to the north closed two roads, while some subway stations in Busan have been flooded since about 2:50 p.m. local time, Yonhap said.
