100 More Dead Turtles ‘Seen By Fishermen Floating In The Sea’ Off Coast Of El Salvador

Artisanal fishermen and beach Canton El Pimental, in San Luis Talpa, La Paz department, reported yesterday morning to El Salvador Zoological Foundation (FUNZEL) located in the area, having displayed about a hundred dead turtles floated about 10 miles offshore.

Salvador Peralta FUNZEL technician responsible for the turtle hatcheries in the area of El Pimental, confirmed receiving the notice. He said the fishermen reported having seen, among the dead turtles, two of the species Baule, which is distinguished from the rest by measuring more than two meters long, weighing half a ton, according to the expert, it is a of the most endangered species from extinction.

The place were present Deputy Minister of Environment, Lina Pohl, and expertise in marine life of the institution, who proceeded to perform a necropsy the only body that went to the beach.

After performing the sampling dead turtle, the authorities embarked for finding information from fishermen, however, during scanning, only found two more bodies. Pohl did not rule that the rest could have been swept away by the ocean current to other areas.

This finding adds to reports of dead turtles made by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN) on Monday. That day the authorities said that from September 28 until October 13 report had the 114 dead sea turtles in the Salvadoran coast, of that total, 17 were found on Sunday afternoon at the beach San Diego, and other 23 on the beach Amatal, both the department of La Libertad.

MARN has explained, preliminarily, that the turtles could be dying at sea due to a red tide that was located a few weeks ago. It was a patch of algae off the Salvadoran coast, 100 nautical miles.

Although microalgae link turtle mortality, Pohl did not rule out that the phenomenon could be related to bad practices of some shrimp boats. This hypothesis was supported by the fishermen they did yesterday the new finding.

They said that some dead turtles have been found open its shell, which, in his experience, could warn criminal hand of those who work in industrial fishing, or boat.

Despite these assessments, the authorities have sent samples to the Laboratory of Marine Toxins from the University of El Salvador (LABTOX-UES), which will analyze tissue, intestine and its contents, liver, kidney, muscle and fat to determine the true causes of deaths.

In addition, heavy metals and seek FUNZEL will test for abnormalities in the kidneys.
