Stormy Weather Cuts Power To 15,000 Homes In Surrey

Flooding in Guildford

More than 15,000 properties in Surrey are without electricity supplies following stormy weather overnight.

UK Power Networks said extensive damage had been caused by falling trees, branches and debris blown on to overhead power lines.

Engineers are currently working to restore power supplies in the county, spokeswoman Niamh Arnett said.

Any customers affected by cuts have been advised to call the UK Power Networks helpline on 0800 7838866.

Heavy rainfall has also flooded roads and some homes across the county.

‘Nine inches now’

Roland Locke, of Brockham, said he was woken up at about 05.00 GMT by the sound of water rushing through the back door cat flap.

He added: “The water was already six inches deep and has continued to rise for the last hour.

“We have about eight to nine inches now.”

Nancy Middleton, of Reigate, said: “Our fences are down but that’s the least of it. The ground floor of our home flooded at around 7pm last night.

“We had time to move pets to safety, save photo albums, Christmas presents, etc, pack overnight bags and have booked into a hotel.

“We are lucky we have insurance but it will be months before we can move back home.

“Have told the kids Santa knows where to find them.”

The Environment Agency has issued dozens of flood warnings for the South East.
