North 24-Parganas: A hailstorm that lasted for about 20 minutes on Saturday night in parts of Barasat, Basirhat, Bongaon and Barrackpore, led to the destruction of several houses and crops. Seven persons got injured.
According to administration estimates, about 2,500 houses were damaged and livestock and cattle killed. Zilla parishad representatives visited the affected areas on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Kalyani expressway was blocked by protesters who demanded compensation.
The blockade was lifted only after North 24-Parganas district magistrate Sanjay Bansal assured them to look into the matter.
