Fierce hailstorm strikes again in Marathwada, India

Even as the state government is trying to alleviate the losses of farmers from Marathwada by announcing a `4,000 crore relief package for those affected by rains and hailstorm in March, three districts faced nature’s fury yet again as heavy rainfall coupled with hailstorm was witnessed in the region on Thursday. Two persons even lost their lives in the Osmanabad district following the rains.

Osmanabad, Nanded and Latur districts suffered unseasonal rain.
In Nanded, it started raining on the eve of Wednesday and continued for a couple of hours. The rainfall destroyed the remaining crops like jowar and cotton, while thousands of apricots were seen fallen on the ground. The rain threw normal life out of gear as nobody had expected another such even.
Apart from Latur town, the tehsils in the district, namely Latur and Renapur, witnessed rainfall and hailstorm. The roads in Renapur tehsil were covered with ice owing to the hailstorm. The crops in the fields were also seen flattened.

Bhoom, Paranda, Kalamb and Osmanabad tehsil and town witnessed showers coupled with gusty winds and hailstorm. One farmer each in Kalamb and Osmanabad died due to lightning. They have been identified as Bhagwat Gholwe (Kalamb) and Mangal Arun Pawar (Osmanabad tehsil). The unexpected rain has caused extensive damages to jowar, cotton and mangoes in Bhoom, Paranda, Kalamb and Washi tehsils of the district too.
Unseasonal rainfall coupled with hailstorm had destroyed crops worth `900-crore in Marathwada in February and March. The hailstorm-hit farmers are yet to receive the compensation for their losses when they suffered the latest blow on Wednesday.

However, this time around, four districts, namely Aurangabad, Jalna, Parbhani, Hingoli and Beed have been spared from the rains.
