Landslide Alert

Five Houses Struck by Landslide in Malang

Five houses in luxurious Royal Sigura-gura residential areas, Malang, East Java, were destroyed after they were dragged down by a landslide. A car and motorcycle were also dragged by the landslide to a 20-meter deep ravine. There is no victim reported in the accident. “It happened so fast,” said a local resident, Suwarno, Saturday, April 26.

The houses’ residents, he said, had evacuated one day before it happened. The residents on Jalan Sigura-gura 3, Lowokwaru, Malang, were aware that there were cracks around their houses. The cracks widened after heavy rain hit the area. The cracks, he said, were sign of a landslide.

The residents started to shout when the land suddenly collapsed and took five houses. The houses were places for students from a university that is close to the area. The landslide area has been placed with barricade tapes by the local police.

Meanwhile, some of the residents have also evacuated. They are worried the landslide will spread to other houses. They have moved their belongings to safer places. “My house is fairly far from the landslide, but who can guarantee my safety, right?,” said a resident, Eki Tahapari.
