A boat that capsized and sank off the Libyan coast has left at least 36 people drowned, interior ministry officials confirmed in Tripoli on Sunday. According to the sources the boat which sank since Tuesday was carrying illegal migrants when it capsized with over 150 people on board.

24 bodies have been recovered since Saturday.

Officials said over 50 people have been rescued by the Libyan navy near the coastal city of Garabouli.

The government in Tripoli has asked for help from the European Union to stop migrants using the Mediterranean countries in North Africa as a staging post to reach Europe.

Libya is used as a springboard by black African migrants from Burkina Faso, Senegal, Gambia, Cameroon and Guinea in a desperate attempt to enter Europe by the waters of the Mediterranean Sea.

Speaking on Saturday, Libyan Interior Minister Saleh Mazek warned that unless the EU help deal with the tide of migrants, his country would be unable to stop them.

Hundreds of migrants die every year trying to cross the treacherous waters of the Mediterranean into Europe.
