Wildfire officials in southcentral Alaska say a fire near Soldotna that was caused by an improperly extinguished campfire has burned across 31 square miles, or 20,000 acres. Meanwhile, another fire that prompted some residents of the Cook Inlet village of Tyonek to leave their homes switched course in shifting winds and was bearing down on the community of Beluga about 10 miles away.
The fire near Tyonek has covered about 1 1/2 square miles, or 1,000 acres.
Both fires started Monday.
KTUU reports the state Division of Forestry says the fire near Soldotna is burning along the shore of Tustumena Lake. No evacuations have been ordered.
State Division of Forestry spokeswoman Sarah Saarloos says a fire break built by crews near Tyonek is holding. More than 100 villagers earlier left their homes.
She says crews have been working on site protection efforts Tuesday night in Beluga.
