Another boat disaster was reported early this morning when a vessel carrying 27 Indonesians capsized in Sepang waters, barely 24 hours after a similar incident in Kuala Langat waters in Banting.

“We have rescued 18 people so far,” Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Lieutenant-Commander Mohd Hambali Yaakub told The Star Online.

He said search and rescue operations were ongoing for the nine people still missing.

The wooden boat carrying the illegals was bound for Tanjung Balai when it sank around 3am.

Hambali said it was believed that the boat had originated from Pantai Morib.

In yesterday’s incident, a wooden boat carrying 97 Indonesians, more than twice its capacity, sank about two nautical miles off Sungai Air Hitam in Banting.

Authorities managed to rescue 61 people including 12 women and a five-year-old girl. Nine bodies were also retrieved in the incident.

The vessel, believed to be destined for Tanjung Balai in Sumatra, capsized about an hour after departing from a jetty in Carey Island.

The Indonesians were believed to be heading home to their country to celebrate the holy month of Ramadan. & ndash; June 19, 2014.
