The Eight-mile fire burning near Cañon City still has some people who live in the area on standby to evacuate on Saturday night.
The fire is burning on Bureau of Land Management property in the Phantom Canyon area, which is six miles northeast of Cañon City. Because it is burning on property owned by the BLM – firefighters are only working to build an indirect fire line in strategic locations.
On Friday night people living in 16 homes in the Red Rocks subdivision were told to be ready to evacuate.
The size estimates have been downgraded to about 500 acres because an infrared flight gave firefighters more accurate mapping or it.
Lightning started the fire. Firefighters are still trying to build lines around it. A type one incident command team arrived on Saturday. That designates a team with the most training and experience.
Smoke can be seen from as far away as Cañon City, Pueblo and Colorado Springs.
