A local official said a massive evacuation took place as Mount Sinabung erupts anew. The volcano is located in Karo district of North Sumatra and is considered as one of the most active in Indonesia. The eruption came just a few months after intermittent activities from September to February which claimed 15 lives and left over 30,000 others displaced.
According to Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, the spokesperson for the national disaster agency, Sunday’s burst of ash occurred at 7:29 p.m. (local time), with the ash column rising to about 4,000 meters to the sky. As of press time, the number of evacuees stood at 14,382. Mount Sinabung roared back to life after 400 years of inactivity. Its seismic upheaval prompted the Indonesian transport ministry to issue an aviation warning.
