Plane Crash Kills WWII Vet Near Rochester, New York, USA

The FAA is investigating a plane crash that killed a World War II veteran and former prisoner of war outside of Rochester.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says 88-year-old Norman Hasman was practicing touch-and-go landing exercises Saturday afternoon when his single-engine plane veered off course and crashed in Parma.

Hasman was pronounced dead at the scene.

People who knew him say he was an experienced pilot, and was shot down twice while serving as a tail gunner during World War II.

“He had a great life at 88, he was doing what he loved.
I think he’d rather his time end doing this than sitting in a recliner,” said Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Robert Murphy.

Officials say wind may have played a role in the crash.

They say the airfield where Hasman died was named after him.
