Japan’s Meteorological Agency has issued a red-level weather alert for the Kagoshima, Kumamoto and Nagasaki prefectures of the island of Kyushu and recommended the evacuation of about 20,000 from southern Kyushu amid a looming threat of landslides and flashfloods as heavy rains continue.
Kagoshima has had up to 112 mm of rain within an hour, local sources say.
Typhoon Neoguri approaching Japan from the south and moving towards Okinawa at a speed of around 25 km per hour with gale-force winds reaching 65 m per second may aggravate the situation. Twice slower wind speeds suffice to knock a grownup man off his feet.
Neoguri may hit Kyushu before moving further northwards, meteorologists warn.
The typhoon is unusually strong for this season and looks to be the worst one this year if it maintains its strength.
