Heavy rain paralyzes life across Turkey
Heavy rain on Saturday evening paralyzed Turkey, particularly İstanbul, where the downpour produced flash floods and many houses and workplaces were flooded

Istanbul was hit by heavy rain on Saturday evening, causing water to collect on several roads, bringing traffic to a standstill. Many locals, heading home from work, were trapped in their vehicles when floodwater accumulated on the roads. Flooding caused traffic jams and congestion problems throughout the city. Municipal workers worked all night to clear streets across the city.

Şehir Parkı Street, in İstanbul’s Bayrampaşa district, was flooded after heavy rain started suddenly on Saturday evening. Two vehicles collided with each other and those stuck inside were rescued by firefighters.

While some municipal workers concentrated efforts on evacuating the flooded street, some of the drivers whose cars were stuck on the street attacked the municipal workers, blaming them for the flood.

Several other cities across Turkey were also hit by flash floods caused by the heavy rain, among them the western Black Sea city of Zonguldak. Heavy rain started at about 10 p.m. on Saturday evening and caught people unprepared. The traffic was badly affected while many houses and workplaces were flooded by the heavy rain. Some vehicles broke down on the flooded roads. The main roads in Zonguldak were closed and then opened to traffic one hour later.

Çanakkale was another city affected by the heavy rains on Saturday. Life came to a standstill when a heavy downpour hit the city on Saturday afternoon. The heavy rain continued at intervals during the night and many houses were flooded. The flash flood dragged an automobile carrying three people in Lapseki on Saturday. Two of them were saved but 75-year-old Doğan Sabuncu went missing in the flood. Gendarmes and the coast guards have been working to find Sabuncu.

Heavy rain to continue across Turkey

The General Directorate of Meteorology has warned that the heavy rain will continue in many parts of the country. According to forecasts by the directorate, heavy rain will continue to affect the provinces of İstanbul, Yalova, Bursa, Kocaeli, Sakarya and Bilecik over the following days. The General Directorate of Meteorology also warned locals of possible incidents of flash flooding, lightning, tornadoes and transport delays.

Waterspout in Istanbul

A waterspout was spotted on the Golden Horn on Saturday. Accompanied by a thunderstorm and rain, the waterspout, which caused panic among locals, also moved onto land and damaged roofs in the area before dissipating.

Waterspouts and tornadoes are not very frequent in Turkey, but they have recently become an increasingly common weather phenomenon in the country.

In recent years, waterspouts have touched down in the Marmara region. Global warming is believed to be behind the change in climate in Turkey. There were several cases of waterspouts on the Anatolian side of İstanbul in June of this year. Those waterspouts, sometimes turning into tornadoes, damaged houses and workplaces but left no causalities. One waterspout touched down near Balıkesir in the middle of July, while the most recent was in İstanbul on Saturday afternoon.

Experts had warned that waterspouts would become more common in Turkey several times before because, they say, Turkey’s climate is turning into a sub-tropical one. The experts had stated that summer waterspouts would become an ordinary and natural event in Turkey, adding that the severity of waterspouts would also increase in the coming years.

The experts had also warned that heavy rains and flash floods would also increase in the coming years. The recent waterspouts and rain storms that hit İstanbul and other parts of Turkey confirm the experts’ statements.

The center of a waterspout has a great rotating power around a central column of air and it is this part of the whirlwind that causes damage to buildings. Waterspouts are seen in regions with very high temperatures and humidity. That is why they are more commonly seen by the coast or in the ocean.
