Severe Weather Alert

Numerous neighborhoods in St. Clair Shores were flooded and swam in inches of standing water Monday evening following thunderstorms earlier in the day. Authorities have closed off some streets and are advising residents to avoid driving after receiving calls from stranded motorists.

“We’ve had to barricade certain streets,” said St. Clair Shores Police Sgt. Jenna Conrad. “It’s definitely advisable or best to stay at home until the water subsides. We have some roads that are impassable.”

The city’s storm drainage sewage system was unable to drain all of the water, Conrad said. She said crews have been notified of the issue, which began around 5 p.m.

“They’ve advised us that they’re working on it,” she said.

St. Clair Shores and Grosse Pointe area residents posted photos of the flooding issues on social media. Some residents can be seen pushing their cars through water and others used canoes and kayaks to navigate flooded streets.

The DTE Energy power outage map showed late Monday that crews were responding to scattered outages. National Weather Service Meteorologist Mike Richter said he has received reports of street flooding, with some areas totaling at least two to three inches of standing water.

The National Weather Service received multiple reports of heavy rain and hail throughout the metro Detroit area, including parts of Oakland and Monroe counties. In Ferndale, close to two inches of rain fell. According to the weather service, some of the heaviest rainfall was recorded in Wyandotte, which received 2.67 inches of rain.
