HEAVY RAIN IN THE VALPARAÍSO REGION HAS LED TO A MASSIVE LANDSLIDE IN THE CITY OF REÑACA FORCING THE HOTEL & APART COSTA TO EVACUATE ALL ITS GUESTS AND CAUSING SERIOUS DAMAGE TO ITS INFRASTRUCTURE
The Valparaíso Region has been taking lots of heavy rain the last couple of days, and yesterday mud started running down the slope of a hill just behind The Apart Hotel in Barros Arana Street, destroying windows and walls as it entered the first floor.
No people were hurt due to the rapid evacuation, but belongings like phones and wallets were lost in the mud stream. Several vehicles outside the building were also damaged.
“Thank God no one has been hurt. The damage is inside where there is one and a half meters of mud, and all the furniture is lost. The first and second floor is completely lost,” said the manager of the Apart Hotel, María Hernández.
Staff of the Transportation Section arrived later, and began the process of removing the sediment and cleaning up.
It is speculated that the hill gave in to the rain, as the ground was very soft due to the work of a tunnel underneath the hill. An investigation has begun to decide if the conditions were up to standards, and if anyone is to be held responsible for the accident.
“At first we have to remove all the mud and rebuild the area, and in parallel we have determined to start an investigation to determine whether there is anyone responsible for the landslide,” said Minister of Public Works Alberto Undurraga, who arrived at the scene to oversee the beginning of the clean up at Apart.
