650 TONS of farmed Salmon ‘suddenly die’ in Finnmark, Norway

Fish Kill Alert

NRS’ farming operation in Region North has recently experienced sudden high mortality on site Kokelv in Finnmark county.  The cause is probably a poisonous algae blooming for the fish in this area. It is estimated that about 650 – 750 tonnes biomass has consequently died. The fish has an average weight of 2.4 kilo and was scheduled to be harvested in the fourth quarter of 2014 and in the first quarter of 2015. This incident may decrease the harvest volume in this period by about 500 – 700 tonnes compared to prior estimated.  Mortality at the site is currently almost back to normal levels. It is expected that the incident will result in a one-off cost in the third quarter of 2014 of approximately NOK 18 – 22 million.
