A traffic accident happened in the early morning hours of today in the city of Camagüey -some 530 kms east of Havana- when a train and a truck converted to a passenger bus collided, leaving 15 people injured.
Major Rafael Torres Molina, of the Ministry of the Interior, told Adelante website reporters that among the injured passengers, four are very seriously wounded.
The most gravely injured patients were admitted to Manuel Ascunce Domenech Provincial Hospital and one child to Eduardo Agramonte Piña Children Hospital, also in this Cuban eastern province.
The crash occurred at a railroad crossing near Amalia Simoni Clinical-surgical Hospital, specifically where the Camagüey-Nuevitas track meets the Finlay Avenue that leads to the Ignacio Agramonte International Airport.
Witnesses testified that the suburban train that was operating on Camagüey-Altagracia route made the sound signals when approached the crossing. However, the truck-bus which was coming from Senado (municipality of Minas) did not stop, said Major Torres Molina.
So, the driver violated Article 80-1 of Law 109 (Highway Safety Code), which reads that drivers must stop their vehicles when approaching a level crossing and make sure that none train nor any other car is coming by the railroad.
The officer recalled that this is the sixth accident that a mass transport vehicle has been involved in 2014, and if compared to same period of last year, the number of accidents as well as deaths and injured people has increased.
Aside from this crash, other two road accidents have happened in Camaguey province over the last few weeks in which trucks carrying people have been involved with a death toll of five.
Some 5, 600 road accidents have happened in Cuba in the first half of this year, and although there have been 109 fewer accidents compared to 2013, experts believe the reduction in the number has been meaningless, an AIN news item announced recently.
