Alert level 2 raised as water levels rise alarmingly in Marikina River, Philippines

Severe Flood Warning

Residents near the Marikina River were advised to prepare for possible evacuation early Friday after Alert Level 2 was raised over the river after hours of heavy rain.

As of 4:10 a.m., the water level at the river reached 16 meters, the Marikina City government said.

Level 2, when the water is 16 meters above sea level, means “maghanda (prepare).” Level 3, when the water is 17 meters above sea level, means “lumikas (evacuate).”

The fourth, Critical Level, is adopted when the water is 18 or more meters above sea level, and forced evacuation is implemented.
