Taiwan’s meteorology authority issued land and sea warnings on Friday as Tropical Storm Fung-Wong approaches the island.
Its weather bureau forecast that the storm center is likely to land in the south on Friday night, before moving northwards up the island.
It urged Pingtung, the southernmost county in the island, to brace for Fung-Wong, which is likely to bring fierce gales and heavy rainfalls to the region.
The bureau also warned of high coastal waves, urging boats in the Bashi Channel and the southern waters off Taiwan to be on the alert.
As of 8:30 p.m., Fung-Wong was centered 370 km south of Taiwan’s southernmost tip, moving in a north-northwest-north-northeasterly direction at a speed of 15 km per hour, the bureau said.
The tropical storm also contributed to unusual heat in northern Taiwan. Temperatures in Hsinchu soared to 38.8 degrees Celsius at 12:20 p.m. on Friday, the highest record in the island this year.
The bureau said warm and dry winds from the periphery of Fung-Wong have been blowing down into the valleys of the region, leading to the hot weather.
Temperatures in the northern region are likely to drop a little, with short showers on Saturday. As the storm continues to head north, all parts of Taiwan will be rainy on Sunday, the bureau added.
