Eruption in the Bárðarbunga Caldera in Iceland which could lead to considerable ash cloud getting more likely

Volcano Alert

An eruption inside the Bárðarbunga caldera would lead to a flood, likely up north and a considerable ash cloud, says volcanologist Ármann Höskuldsson in an interview with Vísir, reports Grapevine.is.
“It is becoming more likely that there will be an eruption under the glacier” says Ármann Höskuldsson, and continues “The eruption in Holuhraun can not handle much more and this shit has to come out somewhere” he says to Vísir, according to Grapevine.is. The last weeks there has been a substantial subsiding of the caldera floor of Bárðarbunga. A new GPS station on top of the Bárðarbunga monitors the subsidence closely. If an eruption would occur inside the Bárðarbunga caldera, “It could lead to a similar situation to the one we saw when Eyjafjallajökull erupted (in 2010), but that will depend on the direction of the wind and so forth” Ármann told Vísir. The most important thing now is to be prepared Ármann says. “It is absolutely clear that an eruption would affect air traffic, but to what extent will depend on how fine the ash is and how powerful the eruption is.” Ármann told Vísir according to Grapevine.is and says “Glacial flooding would take out roads and powerlines, as we have seen in the past” says Ármann Höskuldsson. When Eyjafjallajökull erupted in 2010, it affected millions of travellers during the 6 days period when the air traffic in Europe almost came to a standstill because of the ash cloud.
