INCESSANT rain since early yesterday morning caused a landslide at kilometre 49, Penampang-Tambunan Road near Kota Kinabalu yesterday.
The road is temporarily closed to traffic following the incident which occured about 80km from the city. Sabah Public Works Department director Datuk John Anthony said signboards have been placed at the site to prevent motorists from entering the area.
“Road repairs are ongoing, as well as a study on whether to cut the hill in the area and create a diversion on the road,” he said when contacted by Bernama yesterday. The incident was believed to have happened at 5am.
Regarding the sunken land at Km45.6, Donggongon-Tambunan Road, John said the road is still closed off to vehicles in both directions.
The area was closed off after the soil caved in due to continuous rain since early morning on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, a Tambunan Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said he received a report on the landslide at about 9am today. He said no victims or vehicles were reported to be buried in the incident.
“The public should use alternative roads such as the Kimanis-Keningau route,” he added. Other alternatives are the Tambunan-Ranau, Keningau-Kimanis and Tenom-Sipitang routes.
