At least three volcanic quakes were recorded at restive Mayon Volcano in the last 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said Saturday.
In its 8 a.m. update, Phivolcs said this is consistent with “overall slow, magma intrusion at depth that has characterized this year’s activity.”
Phivolcs also noted white steam plumes of moderate volume, drifting northwest and west-southwest. No crater glow was observed Friday night.
On the other hand, Phivolcs reiterated Mayon remains unstable due to slow but sustained ground deformation of the edifice by subsurface magma.
Still, it said Mayon’s alert status remains at Alert Level 3, meaning an eruption is possible in weeks or months.
More than 12,000 families were evacuated from Mayon’s danger zones since mid-September, when Phivolcs raised the alert level to 3.
However, some families living at the extended danger zone seven to eight kilometers from the volcano have been allowed to return to their homes, though they should be ready to evacuate if needed.
