Emergency crews say they got a call around 3 o’clock Saturday afternoon about what they call a small “Cessna-style” plane coming in for an emergency landing.
There is still no word on where the flight was originally intended to go, but the pilot had radioed to the airport tower that the landing gear was malfunctioning. That’s when emergency crews sprang into action. As you can see, airport security helped clear the runway as Lawton police and fire responded, along with EMT’s to prepare for the plane’s landing. Officials say when the plane reached the runway, the landing gear was only partially down so when it hit the ground the gear completely collapsed and the plane slid down the runway on its belly. Fire crews had sprayed the runway down with fire retardant foam to prevent any potential sparks from igniting the aircraft. The pilot and passenger were not injured.
Airport officials say all runways are clear and back open and no flight schedules were affected by the landing.
