A tornado formed about 2 p.m. in Amite, Louisiana. It crossed over into Columbia, Mississippi, and moved northeast, Marion County officials said.
Columbia resident Justin Hill took a picture of what 16 WAPT meteorologists said was a rain-wrapped tornado.
Emergency officials said several businesses were destroyed and the Walmart sustained heavy damage.
There were injuries reported at Walmart and also at a trailer park, an emergency responder told 16 WAPT News.
Power lines were also down along Highway 98, according to weather spotter reports.
A day care on Highway 42 in Sumrall was damaged, but no injuries were reported, police said. The children had been moved to a bank nearby when the severe weather threatened.
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency sent a crew to survey the damage.
Golf ball-sized hail fell in Enterprise, along with some pea-sized hail in the Bude area. There were also reports of hail in McComb, Liberty and Woodville, the 16 WAPT Weather team said.
Emergency officials said some trees were down in Lincoln County. There were also power outages reported.
The storm produced damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph, which led to several tornado warnings issued by the National Weather Service.
The wet road conditions created treacherous driving conditions in the Jackson metro area and led to several wrecks.
Rankin County’s storm room on Marquette Road was open Tuesday. Sheriff Bryan Bailey said it would remain staffed until the severe weather threat had passed.
16 WAPT Chief Meteorologist David Hartman said he expected the severe weather to move out of Central Mississippi by late Tuesday afternoon. Storms and showers could linger through the evening, he said.
The weather will clear and conditions will be nice Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, Hartman said.
