The first winter storm of 2015 began cranking across parts of the West over the weekend, dumping enough precipitation to close schools and cause travel headaches.
More than a foot of new snow will be dumped by Winter Storm Gorgon in some areas. To the west, schools in one Washington town were closed after a string of mudslides were triggered by the storm’s rainy side.
“Winter Storm Gorgon will move out of the northern Rockies on Monday and into the northern and central Plains, bringing a quick burst of snow,” said weather.com meteorologist Linda Lam. “Up to eight inches may accumulate in a few spots from southeastern South Dakota through Iowa through Monday night.”
But Gorgon will pack more than just a snowy punch, Lam added. Winds are expected to gust as well, making for dangerous visibilities due to blowing snow. Additionally, temperatures will plunge, and when the wind blows, wind chills will plunge, she said.
