Pacific storm to increase avalanche danger in North Idaho, USA

Avalanche Alert

Officials are warning that the avalanche danger in the mountains of North Idaho will increase over the weekend.

The Spokesman Review reports that snow recently fell in the mountains and the Idaho Panhandle Avalanche Center says the risk of a slide will increase as a new Pacific storm arrives in the region.

The National Weather Service issued an avalanche warning for Sunday and Monday for the mountains of Bonner, Boundary and Shoshone counties. Officials predict 5 to 17 inches of new snow for the weekend.

The avalanche center said it found two layers of instability in the snow pack and they could fail with new snow on top. The center says the Selkirk and Cabinet mountains near Sandpoint and the St. Regis Basin in Shoshone County has moderate avalanche danger through Saturday and increasing Sunday.
