So much for that snow-free winter!
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for much of Central and Eastern Massachusetts, saying a coastal storm beginning Saturday morning could dump 4 to 7 inches of snow.
The heavy, wet snow could reduce visibility to one-quarter mile and make travel difficult. It could also bring down tree branches and power lines, the forecasters said.
The snow is expected to begin Saturday morning, mix with rain about midday, then change back to snow in the afternoon and evening, the forecasters said.
A National Weather Service snowfall map issued Thursday afternoon showed a swath of heavier snow running diagonally from the northeastern corner of the state to the southern edge of the central portion of the state.
The immediate coast, as well as much of Southeastern Massachusetts and much of Western Massachusetts, will get less snow.
“This is our first significant event,” said weather service meteorologist Bill Simpson. “Luckily, it’s happening over the weekend, because people aren’t quite used to driving in the snow just yet.”
Wind gusts of 40 to 50 miles per hour on the Cape could raise the chances for downed branches and power lines, forecasters warned.
Forecasters said there was a chance of minor coastal flooding Saturday afternoon and early Sunday morning.
Sunshine will reappear Sunday morning, forecasters said. Temperatures will crest in the mid-30s and drop to the teens at night.
Monday could bring some more snow showers to the state, though accumulations will be much smaller than the weekend, Simpson said.
Cold will follow the snow, with temperatures Tuesday and Wednesday dropping to the teens and low 20s. Nighttime temperatures will likely be in the single digits as cold air moves down from Canada, forecasters said.
It won’t stop there, Simpson said. “Much of next week is going to be pretty cold,’’ he said.
