Severe Hail storm badly damages crops in Jaipurhat, Bangladesh

Sudden downpour along with sleet took a toll havoc on the croplands in three northern districts of the country yesterday.
 
In Jhenidah, vast track of croplands in 12 unions of Moheshpur upazila got damaged extremely due to heavy hailstorm before dawn.
 
Sources said the rain lasted for just one hour starting from 3am.
 
Moheshpur upazila UNO Nasima Khatun said the flash hailstorm caused heavy loss of the crops in her locality.
 
Of the unions, Natima, Jadabpur, Manderbaria, Swaruppur, SBK as well as the district tow were the worst affected in the rain.
 
SBK UP Chairman Sazzadur Rahman said ten villages of his area saw the rain vastly and crop of which such as lentil, tobacco, wheat and mango buds became victim to the storm.
 
One farmer named Emadul Islam from Sundarpur village said his tin-shade house was blown away and his 25-decimal of lentil cropland got damaged completely.
 
Another farmer namely Abdul Kader in Bhalaipur village said his 3-bigha tobacco plot incurred the damage of rain very badly. “Now how I will repay the loan taken from a local NGO for this purpose,” he added letting a sigh of agony.
 
Moheshpur Agriculture Officer Abu Talha said 2000-hector lentil, 650- hector wheat, 200-hector banana, 100-hector maize plots as well as mango and lychee buds on 100-hector of orchards got damaged.
 
Earlier on Sunday night, 300-acre of croplands in 15 villages of Kazirber union under the upazila got damaged due to a hailstorm, the officer went on. 
 
In Chuadanga, two spells of hail-shower in the evening and at night caused havoc damage on the vast tracks of land in the district.
 
Besides, mango buds in different orchards also sustained the damage.
 
Local weather office said they recorded 30.6mm rain till 7pm from 4pm although it started with drizzling and finally ended with downpour along with hailstone.
 
The rain was appeared more in Darshana area of Damurhuda, Jibannagar and Alamdanga upazilas.
 
One named Hazera Begumm, 35, wife of Anarul Islam, from Panchkamlapur area of Alamdanga upazila, got severely injured as mud wall of her house fell on her due to the storm, who was admitted to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital.
 
Locals opined that the farmers incurred a great loss in the flash hailstorm.
 
In Meherpur, a 30-minute hail-shower in the evening took quite a toll on the crops of local farmers.
 
Basically the district’s three upazilas – Sadar, Gangni and Mujibnagar – experienced the unusual rain. 
 
When asked, Meherpur Agriculture Expansion Directorate Deputy Director Zahidul Amin said they were apprehending havoc damage of newly-planted crops in the rain and he directed the different assigned officials to ascertain loss of their blocks.
 
Sadar upazila Agriculture Officer AKM Kamruzzaman said tobacco plants became worse victim in the rain as the leaves got perforated in the hit of sleet.
 
Besides, it damaged mango buds also very badly, raising apprehension of loss to the cultivators.
 
However, Boro croplands got benefited as the rain worked as natural pesticide on those, the officer went on.
 
Later, he advised the mango cultivators to spray fungicide to prevent possible damage of mango buds.
