Three people were taken to a hospital by helicopter and ambulance after a crash shut down a major Roy intersection and delayed nearby trains Friday night.
The accident occurred about 8 p.m. Friday when witnesses said a westbound Suburban may have run a red light at 1900 West and Hinkley Drive (31st Street), colliding with a northbound pickup truck, said Roy police detective Matthew Gwynn.
The SUV traveled about 150 yards down an embankment, stopping at a fence running alongside a set of railroad tracks, Gwynn said. The vehicle stayed upright and did not roll over.
Two people who were in the SUV, including a teenager, were taken from the scene by medical helicopter, Gwynn said, while the driver of the pickup truck was transported by ambulance.
Details about their conditions were not available.
Due to proximity to the railroad tracks, Union Pacific trains and a southbound FrontRunner train were delayed as police investigated the crash and checked for debris on the lines. Trains were cleared to proceed before 10 p.m.
Westbound lanes of Hinkley Drive and southbound lanes of 1900 West remained closed into the evening as police cleared the scene. The crash remains under investigation. Drivers were asked to avoid the area.
