NORTHWEST Queensland’s record-breaking heatwave will come to the southeast tomorrow, when temperatures rise to 35C in Brisbane.
Ipswich and the western suburbs will get to 39C, with the chance of records being broken.
Temperatures would ease by about 1C on Friday.
Weather bureau forecaster Jess Carey said temperatures would spike when a hot air mass from the inland was dragged across to the southeast.
“They’ve had terrible conditions in the NT already,’’ Mr Carey said.
“And Burketown has broken records three times in the past week.’’
The Gulf of Carpentaria township reached 42.7C a week ago, its hottest March day on record.
Mr Carey said near-Brisbane areas like Ipswich and Toowoomba would be hotter than the city.
The March record for Ipswich was 38.9C so it was a chance of being broken today.
Conditions in the west would be tough, with temperatures generally 5C to 10C above average.
Mr Carey said the heat would soil moisture levels in southern central border regions which were already in drought.
“A woman from Bollon in the St George district was telling me last week that they’ve had three failed wet seasons in a row,’’ he said.
“It’s a tough time for that community, and this heatwave doesn’t help at all.’’
