Hail stones covered areas near Red Square on the University of Washington campus late Tuesday afternoon. A line of showers and thunderstorms moved through Seattle, bringing heavy rain, lightning strikes and half-inch-sized hail, according to the National Weather Service. The storms, associated with the Puget Sound convergence zone, were expected to drift east toward Kirkland, the weather service said. Hail the size of BBs was reported as far south as downtown Seattle around 4:30 p.m. The weather caused traffic delays throughout the Seattle area, and lightning caused outages that left about 500 Seattle City Light customers in North Seattle and Shoreline without power.
