The death toll from several avalanches recorded in Afghanistan in the last hours increased to 88, while 26 people were injured in the middle of a snowstorm that plagues the country’s northeast, an official said.
The governor of the northeastern province of Panjshir, Abdul Rahman Kabiri, said that in addition at least 15 people are trapped “in remote areas” of the northeastern territorial demarcation.
Kabiri said the death toll could rise as rescue operations continue its course, but said they do not have sufficient machinery and equipment for snow removal.
About 100 homes and several schools were destroyed by snow avalanches, Kabiri said, adding that about 500 head of cattle have also died.
The weather situation during the last days being particularly distressing in northeastern Afghanistan.
On Sunday, in the province of Badakhshan, twelve people were killed in an avalanche that destroyed their homes while they slept.
Afghanistan suffers frequent natural disasters that cause great loss, as landslides that killed 2,000 people in May last year in the Northeast.
