
The remains of 55 dolphins and four sea lions were found stranded on a beach in the town of San Felipe, reported the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa).
Through a statement, the agency reported that an inspection, on a stretch of beach almost 124 km in the area, the bodies of these species were found, without being able to determine the cause of death.
He said that a phone call alerted the find, whereupon the delegation of Profepa in Baja California conducted a land tour on March 11 in the southern part of San Felipe, from a place called “La Hacienda”, to the fishing ampo c ” El Caracol “, located opposite the Puertecitos-San Luis Gonzaga, Ensenada, Baja California highway.
In that traveled a total of 55 dead dolphins and 4 sea lions were observed; these were found scattered manner (various events) along the beach (sandy substrate), “says the statement.
The office boasts that the organisms found 22 dolphins have about 20 days or more have died, and the remaining 33 dolphins and four sea lions, are estimated to have approximately 5-7 days have perished.
All animals in an advanced state of decomposition. The cause of death is unknown, since the observation of the specimens is highlighted not have any laceration or wound or no presence of nets, hooks or traces indicating that death is attributable to fishing, “he says.
Local fishermen mentioned that recently the unusual sighting of over 200 dolphins was in the area with apparent good health.
The statement stresses that the delegation of Profepa in BC contacted research institutions and staff of the Federal Commission for Protection against Health Risks (COFEPRIS) in order to investigate the causes of the deaths.
