Large die off of ducks during winter on Long Island, New York, USA

Winter has been brutal—and not just for humans. On Long Island, even the ducks are suffering.
 
Black ducks and greater scaup, also called broadbill ducks, have been starving to death because of the frigid weather, experts say. Ice in the shallow marshes and ponds along the shores of Long Island, where the ducks winter over, have kept the birds from their usual fodder of insects, sea snails and plants.
