Tornado Hampton 02.06.12

A tornado killed two people and injured about 60 others in Xanxere, a city in the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, emergency management officials said Tuesday.

The tornado damaged about 500 houses as it tore through the city on Monday, forcing the evacuation of about 1,000 people, the Santa Catarina emergency management office said.

The tornado’s winds reached 84 kph (52 mph), national weather service meteorologist Mamedes Luiz Melo said.

At least six neighborhoods in Xanxere, which is in the western part of Santa Catarina, were affected by the tornado, which toppled power poles, leaving 200,000 residential and business customers without electricity.

Some sections of the city were left without power, water and telephone service, but the Santa Catarina state government said utility workers were trying to restore service as soon as possible.

Emergency management office personnel have distributed 630 mattresses and other items to people affected by the tornado.
