A positive test for avian influenza may impact more than 70,000 birds in a commercial flock in LaMoure County.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed the virus within this flock, which contains approximately 69,000 turkeys and 2,000 chickens. The USDA has worked with state agencies to quarantine the flock and will be euthanizing the animals to prevent the spread of the virus.
The North Dakota Department of Agriculture said in a release there is no immediate public health concerns due to the discovery of the virus.
“We have activated the avian influenza response plan that has been in place for some time,” said North Dakota State Veterinarian Dr. Susan Keller. “It is a collaborative effort with help from federal and state agencies, local officials and poultry producers.”
This is the state’s second case of the highly-pathogenic H5N2 virus. The first was confirmed on a Dickey County poultry farm earlier this month.
