Strombolian activity observed at Turrialba volcano in Costa Rica

The ejection of incandescent lava in small strombolian-type explosions has been observed since 03:40 this morning at the volcano’s crater. This means that new magma has now arrived at the crater.

The gradual change of eruptive style over the past weeks, from hydrothermal (steam-driven) explosions with relatively cold ash, then increasingly hot ash and gas emissions to now at least partially magma-driven explosions, reflects the slow ascent of magma.
