A collision between two commuter trains in South Africa has left at least one person dead and about 240 injured, government officials and emergency services said Tuesday.
The trains were traveling from Pretoria to Johannesburg when they collided early morning at a southeast Johannesburg train station, said a spokeswoman for state-owned Metrorail, Lillian Mofokeng.
A guard at the back of one of the trains sustained fatal injuries in the collision, she said.
All of the injured passengers have been taken from the crash site, and about 80 have already been treated for their injuries and released, Ms. Mofokeng added.
One woman, who had been trapped between the train and a wall, was taken by helicopter to a nearby hospital, said Russel Meiring, a spokesman for ER24, a private national emergency medical service at the scene.
Ms. Mofokeng said officials are investigating the cause of the collision.
