A massive sinkhole has forced residents to flee their homes with three apartment blocks at serious risk of collapse.
 
Around 60 residents in Harris Park in Sydney’s west were evacuated on Saturday night when an adjoining construction site filled with water as the relentless rain continued to pound down.
 
A sinkhole opened up alongside the apartment blocks when, after weeks of rain, the walls of the construction site began to crumble.
 
The sinkhole threatened to undermine the foundations of two buildings on Parkes Street.

‘Initial inquiries have indicated recent severe weather conditions have caused excessive soil erosion and affected the structural integrity of the buildings,’ NSW Police confirmed in a statement.
 
All occupants have been accounted for and stayed with friends or family for the night.
 
The residents of one apartment block have been allowed to return to the building.
 
However, two other apartments block remain evacuated on Sunday afternoon.

The footpath on Parkes Street has also been rules as unsafe and the road is closed.
 
A team have been working to determine the extent of the problem and attempt to reinforce the site.
 
Civil engineers, geologists and the construction site developer have all been at hand, with a fire and rescue cherrypicker used to safely allow inspectors access into the pit.
The east coast of Australia has been battered by rain for more than three weeks.
 
However, fortunately rain is expected to ease this week for Sydney and Brisbane; allowing the state to dry out and recover from the drenching.
   
Flood warnings are in place for seven rivers in New South Wales and six in Queensland.
 
This week, in Queensland and New South Wales’ north, six people were killed when heavy rains had catastrophic consequences.
 
As flood warnings continued Sunday following a severe deluge that cut power to thousands of homes and isolated numerous communities.
