
Lightning strikes killed 15 people in Sunamganj, Jamalpur, Sherpur, Dinajpur, Gaibandha, Chittagong and Chandpur districts on Saturday. In Sunamganj, six people, mostly farmers, were killed and three others injured by thunderbolts during a Nor’wester that lashed different upazilas of the north-eastern district. Five of them died in Dirai upazila. They are: Abdul Kader, 20, Haribhokto Das, 40, Abdul Jalil, 50, Razu Miah, 20, and Rasheda Begum, 40. Locals said Abdul Kadir, Haribhakta Das and Abdul Jalil died on the spot after being struck by lightning while working in paddy fields. Thunderbolt killed 16-year-old Bamon Mia while working in a field in Madhabpur upazila. Three others – Abu Taher, ‘Mobin’, and ‘Faruk’ – were injured in lightning strikes in Dirai. In Jamalpur, three people were killed when lightning hit them. They are: Rubel Hossain, 16, Fulu Miah, 60, and Masum Billah, alias Babu, 18. In Dinajpur, farmer Mohammad Ferdous, 40, was knocked down by thunderbolt when working in a field. He died in a local hospital later. Lightning killed 50-year-old Maleka Begum when she was working in their courtyards in Sherpur district. In separate incident in Sherpur, grade VII student Mariam Begum, 12, fell into a pond and died after being struck by lightning, police say. Lightning struck Baddi Mia, 35, and four other people when they were cutting trees in the district. A woman died after being struck by lightning in Fatikchharhi upazila in Chittagong. In Gaibandha, a farmer was killed by thunderbolt. The dead is Narayan Robi Das, 4. His wife Figni Robi Das was also hit by lightning. In Chandpur, Md Billal Hossain Gazi, 45, a farmer, was killed in lightning. Two others, Md Monir Hossain Gazi, 43, and Md Ali Khan, 45 were injured after being struck by thunderbolt, according to a news agency.
