A powerful typhoon slammed into southern Japanese islands early Tuesday, bringing heavy rains, strong winds and high waves in the region, news reports said.
Typhoon Noul caused power outages on the island of Miyako and authorities advised thousands of residents to evacuate their homes on the island of Yoron, broadcaster NHK reported.
As of 8 am (2300 Monday GMT), Noul was about 160 kilometres west-southwest of Amami Oshima island and expected to bring downpours in eastern and western Japan later in the day, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
The sixth typhoon of the season, travelling north-east at a faster pace of 60 kilometres per hour, packed maximum sustained winds of 126 kph and gusts of up to 180 kph, the agency said.
