At least two people have been killed and 20 others injured in a train accident in northwestern Germany, security sources say.
German police officials said on Saturday that the accident happened in a rural area near the town of Ibbenbueren, located 440 kilometers (275 miles) west of Berlin.
Police spokesman Jochen Laschke said the train, which had departed the city of Osnabrueck, collided with a truck loaded with manure on a road crossing.
According to the investigators on the scene, the truck was stuck when trying to drive over the train tracks.
Medical sources say the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital to receive treatment. Three of those injured were said to be in critical condition.
Some of the passengers on board the train are receiving help for psychological trauma.
Germany is known for the quality of its train service and safety record in the region. However, several accidents have recently occurred at train crossings in Germany, as the crossings are often not blocked by barrier gates, especially in rural areas.
The country’s usually reliable train connections have also been hurt in recent months as a result of several strikes by German train drivers, who are in a dispute with Deutsche Bahn over work and pay conditions.
Germany’s worst train accident happened in 1998, when a high-speed train crashed in the northern town of Eschede, killing 101 people and injuring more than 80.
