The India Met Department has upgraded the well-marked ‘low’ over the east-central Arabian Sea to a monsoon depression, the first of the season.
It lay centred about 690 km southwest of Mumbai, 740 km south-southwest of Veraval, and 1,230 km southeast of Masirah Island off Oman.
Deep depression
The Met said the system would move north-northwestwards (away from India’s coast) and intensify further into a deep depression (one step away from being a tropical cyclone) by tomorrow.
Strong winds with speeds reaching 45-55 km/hr and gusting to 65 km/hr have been forecast along and off the Maharashtra, Konkan and Goa coasts during the next two days.
Sea conditions would be ‘rough’ along and off these coasts during the same period. Fishermen have been advised not to venture out into the sea.
Alert issued
Earlier, India had issued a storm alert in the Arabian Sea as a low-pressure area over Lakshadweep had deepened into being ‘well-marked’ overnight.
The system was heading north-northeast (towards the west coast of India) till morning, an update from the US Navy’s Joint Typhoon Warning Centre had said.
Situated 768 km southwest of Mumbai then, it was expected to correct course and steer itself back towards the outer seas and move towards north-northwest.
This track would take it initially towards the Karachi coast of Pakistan, and later towards the Persian Gulf-coast of Oman, according to consensus model forecasts.
The storm is spiriting a bulk of the monsoon moisture and rain along with it. The monsoon has not moved much from the alignment struck when making the onset on Friday.
Rain in East
It has been active over north-east India after it entered the region on Saturday, with Cherrapunji in Meghalaya recording typically heavy to very heavy rainfall.
A helpful trough extends from east Bihar to coastal Andhra Pradesh, cutting across Jharkhand and Odisha. Thunderstorms are forecast along this track.
The Met has also predicted a gradual rise in temperature across northwest, central, and east India over the next five days.
Heavy rain is being forecast for many places in north-east India during this period while thundershowers would return to the west coast and parts of the peninsula after the Arabian Sea storm washes out over the Persian Gulf and the neighbourhood.
