Heavy winds from a storm system toppled trees, claimed more than 11 utility poles and caused extensive damage to portions of the electric system in Gardiner on Friday.
Approximately 6,500 people lost electricity due to the storm, and nearly 2,500 remained without service as of 8:30 a.m. Saturday, according to a statement released by Central Hudson Gas & Electric. While the area was under a tornado watch on Friday, the storm was not a tornado, according to the National Weather Service.
Central Hudson crews worked through the night to replace the utility poles. Crews have also begun to make repairs at nearly 75 locations to restore electricity, and tree trimming crews are also on scene.
Electric service is said to be restored by Saturday evening, according to a Central Hudson statement.
