Authorities of the Japanese prefecture of Kanagawa, part of the Greater Tokyo Area, have announced the evacuation of residents within a 1 kilometer (0.62 miles) radius from the Owakudani hot spring due to an increase in volcanic activity in the area of Mount Hakone Tuesday.
TOKYO (Sputnik) — Earlier on Tuesday, Japan’s Meteorological Agency raised the level of danger in the area of the Mount Hakone, some 80 kilometers (50 miles) southwest from Tokyo, to the third on a scale of 5, announcing a restriction on access to the volcano area.
An increase in the frequency of volcanic earthquakes in the Mount Hakone area was recorded on April 26. In early May, the level of danger in an area near the Owakudani, known as the Great Boiling Valley, was raised to the second level and travel restrictions were announced. Services of the Hakone Ropeway, which runs through the area, popular among tourists, were canceled.
Dormant volcano Hakone is 1,438 meters (4,718 feet) high and is part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. The last eruption of Hakone was some 2,900 years ago.
