Storms brought lightning strikes and caused flooding, creating trouble for people across Hampton Roads Saturday.

“It just got real dark, and the rain just started coming real hard,” said Giovanni Torres who thought his SUV could make it down a water-covered Monticello Avenue without a problem.

Instead, his SUV stalled out.

“It didn’t look so deep, but it got pretty deep,” Torres told 13News Now.

Friends and strangers helped push his SUV to the side of the roadway.

For nearly two hours, he and others waited for tow trucks. AAA Tidewater says calls for roadside assistance increased by nearly 20 percent Saturday afternoon.

While Torres was stuck in Ghent, firefighters were at work in Berkley where lightning hit Mount Zion Baptist Church, starting a small fire on the roof.

The damage was minor, and Battalion Chief Julian Williamson said it would cause no problems for church services.

Virginia Beach fire crews also spent part of the afternoon putting out fires caused by lightning strikes.

One was on in the 1100 block of Freehold Close in Wesleyan Chase. The other was in the 1200 block of Adair Lane in Glenwood.

Firefighters said flames and smoke were coming from the roof of each home.

The American Red Cross provided help to two people displaced from the home in Wesleyan Chase.

A third lightning strike in Virginia Beach caused medics to take a person to the hospital.

Chief Tom Green with Emergency Medical Services said it happened shortly before 3 p.m. in Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge.

The person was not a victim of a direct hit, but he was close enough to the strike to feel the electrical discharge.

Green told 13News Now the incident was not a major one. The victim went to the hospital to be checked out.
