Three people aboard a private plane that left McAllen died in a crash Thursday evening in Mexico’s Coahuila state, officials said.
The Coahuila attorney general’s office said Friday that investigators responded to the crash at 7:21 p.m. Thursday near a road that intersects the Torreon-Saltillo toll road.
The plane, a single-engine Cessna 206, with the Mexican registration XBMBZ, had departed McAllen-Miller International Airport and was destined for Torreon, the Coahuila state capital.
The plane’s tail number returned no records with Flight Aware, an Internet database that tracks airplane records.
“The flight departed from our airport last night to Torreon and we received a report that it crashed due to a mechanical failure in the municipality of Matamoros in Coahuila,” McAllen Aviation Director Elizabeth Suarez said.
Reynosa newspaper El Mañana identified pilot Abraham Garcia, co-pilot Roger Fuentes and passenger Castro Aureliano Barajas as the three victims who died in the crash.
Bob McCreery, president of McCreery Aviation, the fixed base aviation operator at McAllen’s airport, said the group landed at their terminal about mid-afternoon Thursday and left later in the afternoon. He said he had no comment on the crash because he was not familiar with the pilots.
Representatives at Francisco Sarabia International Airport in Torreon were not available for comment Friday afternoon.
