Heavy rains triggered landslide in Uttarakhand on Saturday blocking the crucial Gangotri highway near Raturi Sera village. Locals and tourists alleged that no assistance from the administration reached them, hours after the disaster struck. The disaster comes at a time when an annual Hindu pilgrimage, Char Dham Yatra, is underway in the state. If the scriptures of Hindu religion are to be believed, the holy shrines at Gangotri, Yamunotri, Badrinath and Kedarnath – collectively called the Chardham – are to be visited once in a lifetime. Annual rainfall is essential in India as rains support two- third of the 1.25 billion population living in rural areas who rely on farming. But excessive rainfalls cause problems like floods, landslide, and water borne diseases.
