Mega African heatwave ready to scorch southern Turkey next week

Heatwave Warning

A heatwave approaching from Africa will scorch Turkey next week, resulting in temperatures over 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) throughout the country, particularly in the Mediterranean and Southeast Anatolia regions
Istanbul Technical University Meteorological Engineering Department Faculty Prof. Orhan Şen announced on Sunday that the African heatwave currently hitting Europe will arrive in Turkey next week.

Temperatures are expected to reach over 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) throughout the country as of Wednesday, especially in the southern provinces along the Mediterranean Sea. Şen notes that temperatures will be 5-6 degrees Celsius higher than seasonal norms.

Pointing out that phenomenon known as ‘El Nino’ in the Pacific Ocean, where the surface temperature of water rises by 1.5 degrees Celsius, is also responsible for high temperatures worldwide, he added that the high temperatures are expected to cause droughts in many areas around the globe.

According to the Directorate of Meteorology 4th Regional Department Antalya Region Prediction and Warning Center, temperatures in the popular resort province of Antalya will reach 41 degrees Celsius (105.8 degrees Fahrenheit) and in Muğla province – home to the popular tourist hotspots of Bodrum, Marmaris and Fethiye – it will reach 42 degrees Celsius (107.6 degrees Fahrenheit). In the landlocked Burdur province between Antalya and Muğla it will reach 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit).

Meanwhile there will be low-strength wind blowing towards the north and the west, occasionally reaching mid-strength. In the afternoon hours the strong winds will blow from the west and southwest, with waves reaching up to 1 meter in height.

Authorities are warning that between the high temperatures and low humidity, residents and visitors should take precautions against possible forest fires or other mishaps.
